Zion National Park Camping

Posted by Wet Sounds on 2nd Feb 2022

Few places in the United States can compare to the majestic sights and unparalleled natural beauty offered within Zion National Park. Located in southwest Utah, Zion National Park is home to several campsites that provide the opportunity for you to spend a night (or several) underneath the starry night sky. Those planning an excursion to the area will find a surplus of activities to indulge in, from white water rafting to scenic hikes and everything in between. If you're thinking about heading out west this year, explore the following awe-inspiring campgrounds near Zion National Park.

Lava Point Campground

We like this campground's proximity to "The Subway," one of Zion's most notable hikes. Although located in a somewhat remote area, about 1 hour and 20 minutes from the South Entrance to the park, you'll have access to parts of the park that visitors seldom see.

Don't let the name scare you off. You won't encounter any lava at this idyllic campground situated at 7,890 feet above sea level. You will, however, experience panoramic views of the area, the opportunity to observe wildlife in its natural habitat, and respite from the bustle of day-to-day life. It's also a great camping option if you want to avoid the crowds. Best of all, admission to this campground is free.

South Campground

Wake up to breathtaking views when you opt to stay at South Campground, a primitive camping spot conveniently located near the Zion National Park Visitor Center. If the incredible scenery isn't enough to win you over, you can't beat its proximity to the shuttle pickup area, which provides easy access to the park. Featuring an impressive 117 campsites, including three wheelchair-accessible locations, you'll find room for all members of the family — and then some.

This lodging site is ideal for those who like to plan for trips since the park requires reservations at least two weeks in advance. As a bonus, park management allows pets on the campgrounds. As a result, your four-legged friends don't have to miss out on any of the action. Like the majority of campsites in the area, South Campground is open seasonally from February through November.

Watchman Campground

About a quarter of a mile from Zion National Park's Visitor Center, Watchman Campground is one of the few Zion-area campsites that remain open throughout the year. As a result, this particular campground tends to fill up on a nightly basis. The good news is that the park accepts reservations for this campground so that you can secure your spot ahead of time.

Within this beautiful location, you'll find spectacular views, shaded areas that will allow you to take some much-needed refuge from the summer heat, and 190 campsites that include both handicap accessible and group sites.

Zion Canyon Campground and RV Resort

Located on 12 acres of paradise, Zion Canyon Campground and RV Resort is a true desert oasis. Campers have access to several amenities at this locale, including fire pits, charcoal grills, picnic tables, showers, and laundry facilities. Grab your cooler speaker and relax and unwind by the outdoor pool for a stress-free evening under the stars.

All RV sites include full hookups that have power, water, sewer, and cable TV. You can kick back and enjoy some relaxation after a long day of hiking. For those in your camping who may not be exactly keen on spending the night in the great outdoors, an upscale lodge close to the campgrounds offers clean and contemporary rooms.

Zion Ponderosa Ranch Resort

Although this resort is a slightly farther distance from the entrance of Zion National Park than the other campgrounds presented here, it made our list of favorite campgrounds for several reasons. Zion Ponderosa Ranch Resort offers many lodging options, from old-fashioned primitive tent camping to "glamping" — an ideal choice for those looking to enjoy some camping in style. Several on-site restaurants ensure you don't have to venture far to find a meal. During peak season, the resort hosts nightly scheduled events.

In addition to its accommodations, Zion Ponderosa Ranch Resort offers several guided adventures for the family to partake in, including horseback riding, jeep tours, canyoneering activities designed for the true thrill-seeker, and guided hiking experiences with a guide well-versed in the geography of the area surrounding Zion National Park.

Things to Do in Zion National Park

With a name that means "heavenly city," visiting Zion National Park is an absolute must when planning a trip to the American West. Zion National Park is one of the busiest national parks in the United States, and for a good reason. Campers of all ages can find endless things to do in and around the park, and no matter what you decide to do, you're certain to have an unforgettable time. While it would be impossible to cover everything in a single trip, we present a few of our favorite activities within Zion National Park below.

Hiking

Bask in the glory of Zion National Park's natural beauty while on a scenic hike through one of the park's many trails. The Narrows and Angel's Hike are two of the most well-known trails within the park, and although they typically take a few hours to complete, the views are well worth it. Novice hikers will enjoy the Canyon Overlook Trail since it's an easy 1-mile round trip hike that ends with a breathtaking canyon view.

Mountain Biking

In recent years, the national park has become increasingly bike-friendly. If you're not big on hiking, you'll encounter many dynamic trails within the park that are equally suitable for mountain biking. Bring your bike or rent one once you get into town for an all-day adventure that you're sure to remember for years to come.

Horseback Riding

For a fun, family-friendly activity, spend an afternoon taking in incredible views of Zion National Park while on horseback. Several local companies offer guided horseback riding tours that are ideal for beginners and more experienced riders.
