Allegheny National Forest

Allegheny National Forest is a popular place to explore in northwestern Pennsylvania. It includes several trails for riding ATVs, as well as sites for overnight camping. One of the leading ATV trails in the forest is the Marienville Trail, which features a parking lot located on Pennsylvania Route 66. You'll find this trail about 11 miles northeast of Marienville and 15 miles southwest of Kane. The parking area includes a ramp for loading and unloading your ATV, as well as restroom facilities.

After you finish your ride, you can head to your campsite within the national forest. This area includes cabin rentals, tent campsites, and RV sites with electrical and water hookups. You can also create a rustic campsite in the forest as long as you follow all safety guidelines. If you want to ride your ATV during the camping experience, you can do so at the OHV-approved camping areas. These areas include places along the Rocky Gap, Willow Creek, Penoke, Timberline, and Marienville ATV trails, but not at the trailheads.

Bloody Skillet ATV Trail

The Bloody Skillet ATV Trail is in Sproul State Forest and was once a portion of a road dedicated to coal mining efforts. The trail is known for exhibiting plentiful wildlife, and riders have spotted wild turkey, bears, and deer when exploring the natural surroundings. This trail is open throughout the year, although it's closed during hunting season. The distinctive name supposedly comes from an old slaughterhouse and farm that once sat along the road.

Sproul State Forest houses many designated campsites available to those riding on the Bloody Skillet ATV Trail. To camp, you need to obtain a free camping permit from the forest district office. If you're planning to bring a group of 10 or more, you'll need a letter of authorization from the Sproul State Forest District Forester.

Darkwater OHV Trail

Another place that's fun to ride an ATV in Pennsylvania is the Darkwater OHV Trail. It carries a difficulty rating of moderate and features heavily wooded areas that are appealing to explore. The trail is close to Pottsville, where you can find plenty of camping areas. Some of the top-rated camping spots in this community include Christmas Pines Campground in Auburn and Camp-A-While in Hegins.

Consider Christmas Pines Campground, which includes sites for tent and RV camping. The RV sites have enough space for vehicles with slideouts, plus water and electricity hookups. When you explore this campground, you'll find a dog park, a small catch-and-release fishing pond, and several cabins available for rent. Camp-A-While is superb for short-term and long-term camping. All tent sites at this location include a picnic table, fire ring, and barbecue grill. Other amenities include a camp store, a game room, and restrooms with showers.

Kettle Creek Trail 

The 3.2-mile Kettle Creek Trail is open to ATV riding and allows riders to access several campsites and other outdoor activities. This trail is located at the start of Forest Road 177 in Ashley National Forest and ends at the forest's east boundary. After a fun day exploring the trails, you can relax at your campsite within the national forest. Many camping areas are accessible via ATV, including tent campsites and cabins available for rent.

Within this particular forest, the cabin rentals offer a distinctive experience. You can stay in one of the historic guard stations converted into a lodging area or set up camp in a yurt. Forest officials constructed the guard stations to provide quick access to the site for fighting fires and dealing with other forestry concerns, but visitors can now rent them for camping excursions.

Mountain Ridge ATV Park

Mountain Ridge ATV Park has more than 140 miles of trails in eastern Somerset County. It's close to Reels Corners and includes 16 different trails varying in difficulty from easy to hard. Whether you're a first-time ATV rider or an experienced adventurer, you can find at least a few trails that will accommodate your abilities and challenge your skills. The fee to access the park varies based on the day of the week, but the cost is well worth it as visitors get access to appealing amenities.

You can also camp at a primitive tent site, rent a rustic cabin, or hook up your RV at one of the larger sites within the park. Campers have access to a shower house and portable toilets throughout their stay. All cabins and campsites include a picnic table and fire ring. The fees for campsites range from $25 to $40 per night, depending on when you visit and whether you choose a site with electricity. Cabin options include two rustic cabins that sleep four people each and a larger rustic cabin that sleeps eight.

The Lost Trails ATV Adventures

Located in Dunmore, The Lost Trails ATV Adventures has something for every adventurer and off-roading enthusiast. This 2,000-acre outdoor area is open throughout the year and houses several well-known trails, including “Top of the World, “The Tunnel,” and “The Lake.” If you like riding through mud and splattering it around, you can find plenty of places to do that within this area as well. All ATV types are welcome here, including utility quads, sport quads, side-by-sides, and dirt bikes.
